Facebook links result in a Wordfence blocked message. How do I fix that?

If you share posts on Facebook you might run into a situation like this:

When I share links from my own site onto Facebook, instead of the relevant information or picture being shared I get this message now on every post:

Important note for site admins: If you are the administrator of this website note that your access has been limited because you broke one of the Wordfence firewall rules. The reason your access was limited is: "Access from your area has been temporarily limited for security reasons".

For this message and similar issues, check the following items:

  • If you have blocked the USA or Sweden in Wordfence's country blocking, this could cause some issues with Facebook posts. Make sure the USA and/or Sweden are not blocked.
  • In the facebook debugger tool fill in the link to your blog post that had an issue and the click the button Fetch new scrape information to see what Facebook is currently seeing.
  • Try unchecking the option to block fake googlebots in Wordfence. This has solved the issue on occasion, and we are looking into a more permanent solution for the problem.
  • If your site may be using CloudFlare, Varnish, or another reverse proxy, check the option How does Wordfence get IPs to make sure Wordfence is set up correctly for your site.
