Scan Scheduling settings are located on the Scheduling tab on the Scan page of the Wordfence menu.

Wordfence provides continuous real-time security for your site. Occasionally we run a full scan of all files, posts, pages, comments, user password and other site components. The scheduler below lets you choose when those full scans will run.

We have displayed the current time your WordPress site uses at the top of the scan scheduling page. You can go to the Settings/General menu to change your timezone. Use the links provided on the scan scheduling page in Wordfence as shortcuts to select scan times. Try clicking the links several times to advance the time. You can also manually select scan start times for each day.

Wordfence Scans run within 1 hour after scheduled time. E.g. A scan scheduled for 1pm will run between 1pm and 2pm. This prevents a stampede on our scanning server at the top of the hour.

How often to scan

If you are using the free version of Wordfence, scans are automatically done once every 24 hours on your site at a time of our choosing. We schedule the time ourselves to avoid overloading our servers. You may also be temporarily unable to scan if our servers experience heavy load and we have to give Premium customers priority.

In general on a server with plenty of resources that is not an extremely large site we recommend you scan once every 24 hours.

If your site does not have many resources or is extremely busy and you are running close to maximum load, we suggest you scan at a minimum once a week, preferably on Saturdays or Sundays.

What time should you scan?

Try to schedule your scans at the time of lowest activity on your website. We recommend in the United States that you schedule your scans between 8PM and 5AM for most websites. This is the time of lowest traffic for most websites in North America.

The same applies to sites with an audience in another country. Try to schedule your scan between 8PM and 5AM local time for your website audience. So even if you're hosting in the USA, if your audience is in the United Kingdom, schedule your scans between 8PM and 5AM London time.

Scheduling your scans out of hours ensures that your website resources are not being used for scans during peak hours. That is one of the benefits of a Premium membership - the ability to schedule scans at a time that suits you.
